North Pole Breakfast

I know many people that have fun with the Elf on a Shelf have a North Pole Breakfast to celebrate his/her arrival.  However, life was crazy and busy so that didn't happen here.  Instead yesterday morning, our elf, Sam, provided a North Pole Breakfast to kick off our holiday weekend!  Simple, low stress and FUN.  Who says I have to be on anyone else's schedule?  Besides a little boy didn't know the difference.  ;-)
To set the mood, I pulled out some of my previous years Christmas decor: a cute little Santa and Snowman, snowflakes, the pine cone trees Bear and I crafted last year, along with a pedestal found from Goodwill that I had spray painted.  I also found my foam snow flakes and candles from last year's New Years Tablescape.
Then I set the table.
Dollar General paper snowmen plates, paper towel 'napkins' fancied up with a candy cane and some of my ribbon stash.  Plus 2 sweet little Santa ornaments found in my wrapping paper box that I had never used as a 'favor' for our little breakfast party.  The adorable Snowmen mugs were a recent gift from Granny.
The menu was all North Pole Breakfast foods:  Snowball donuts, Berry Merry Muffins, Snowmen filled with popcorn.
Fruit candy cane, made with apple slices and a banana.  The store was out of strawberries, so I used what I had on hand!  Bear loves apples.
To drink:  Hot chocolate with 'snow' whipped cream.
Thanks to Pinterest for this easy and adorable snowman cup to hold our popcorn.  Totally makes it OK for breakfast right?!  Ha! You could also fill them with marshmallows.
Total spent for our little breakfast was $3!  I purchased the $1 paper plates and the Merry Christmas picks for the muffins.  That was it.
That sweet smile:  PRICELESS!  Bed head hair and all.  He loved it!  What a way to kick off our holiday weekend and enjoy the Christmas magic.  Bear woke up my baby girl (who is 21!) to have breakfast with him.  She played big sister right along with him in the spirit of Christmas 'excitement'.  These are the things this precious child (who is my nephew that we have custody of for 2 years now) will remember.  Thanks Sam!
Our little Elf on the Shelf isn't 'naughty' at all!  He does do a few silly things, like making a balloon ride from Bear's underwear:
Or fun things like our North Pole Breakfast.  Thanks for the memories Sam!  We are going to miss you, but we know you will return next year in time for the holidays to spread a bit of Christmas cheer to a little boy.

We are ready for Christmas, are you?

Our first Menu Plan of 2012

Although I haven't shared my menu planning each week; I kept at it.  I know I've said it before, several times; but it really helps.  I save time shopping (grocery store - once a week), I save money by having a grocery list and I keep my sanity by not frying brain cells that are exhausted when I clock out at 5pm trying to think up something to feed the family.
I did share my New Year's Eve Menu.  Everything happened as planned; tasty, simple and fun.
I tried a new easy peasy recipe for appetizer meatballs...oh they were Yummy!  Plus there were fancy decorated box cupcakes.  Ok so I cheated, I admit it.  ;-)
Now that your mouth is watering, let's get to this week's menu plan.
It's turning off FRIGID this week after temps in the low 60's during the day.
Cold weather, crazy work week = Soup meals!

Monday - Field peas, cornbread, Mac-n-cheese
Tuesday - Tater soup and grilled cheese sandwiches
Wednesday - Leftovers
Thursday - Veggie Soup with cornbread
Friday - Leftover soup with sandwiches
Saturday - Open, maybe a night out?

What are you having for dinner?

New Year's Eve Table Centerpiece

Do you ever have this idea and just hope it all comes together the way you see it in your mind?
That was me yesterday.
Knowing I would be putting away all the Christmas decor, I still wanted some fun shiny snow inspired winter decorations around the house.  Usually I am standing at the door of Target the day after Christmas waiting for them to open.  Not this year.  Chasing a 4 year old and staying up late playing an elf  watching for Santa, wore this mid-forties momma out!  I did however manage to get everyone out mid-afternoon to scout what was left.
Lucky for me, I found just what I needed for my New Year's Eve centerpiece vision!
My assortment of Goodwill candle holders, along with the white crocheted runner (another Goodwill find last year) and stash of white candles were my base.
The blue trim on the white runner had me thinking blue, white, silver and glass.
The 1st item I found was at Hobby Lobby - the tiny silver star garland ($2).  I almost picked up silver bead garland, but snagged the last strand of stars instead.  So glad I did!  I {heart} them.
Next stop, Target.
Target gave me my hint of blue, with the blue tiny star burst tinsel garland ($1).
I also picked up blue and silver snowflakes at Target (50 cents each color for a pack of four)
The silver tray is another Target deal marked down 50% off for $7.  I've been looking for a silver tray for a while and was tickled pink (or would it be blue?) to find this one at a steal!
Next stop was the much loved by us thrifty decor and crafty types...the Dollar Tree.
Look closely, closer...do you see the white felt snowflakes lining the silver tray?  Dollar Tree HALF off!
A whopping 50 cents.  Along with all the blue and silver bells (8 to a pack), same price.
My fellow shopper con'ed me into a Walmart stop.
At least I found another item while battling my way through the buggies and crowd - the small silver Mirror Ball ornaments in the center candle globe for $1.50.  Mirror Balls just scream New Year's right?!?
A few of the details:
A wine goblet tuned upside down for a candle holder.  To add interest, I stuffed a white snowflake wrestled that sucker under there   from my old Christmas stash under the glass; along with  bells and one of the tiny silver ornaments.
The ornaments and bells are in a wide mouth candle holder sitting atop another Goodwill candle holder (nope I didn't even glue it ...cause I'm daring like that).
The cute tiny fingertip towels say it all...
We don't see much of the fluffy white stuff in Georgia.
I think we are ready for a little late night New Year's Eve celebrating....
by candle light.  I love it.
How are you celebrating New Year's Eve?
There is still time to toss together something shiny and fun on a thrifty budget.
Total spent for my centerpiece ... $14

Somewhat Simple

I hope to share my winter mantel this week too.  Yep, there will be more snow flakes. :-)

Valentine's Day Dinner table

Happy Valentine's Day!
A very simple table for two.
The black candelabra, I found at a yard sale, looking pretty sad.
It was gold and costs me an entire 10 cents!
A bit of black spray paint and it has been transformed.
Add 4 candles (cost total $1) and for $1.10 I have a beautiful way to shine a little glow on our dinner.
The mini pitcher was a find at TJMaxx.

The rest of the items were from around the house.
Just ignore the leaning candles! I fixed that. ;-)
My kissing angels (long ago gift) and extra candles (previous yard sale finds).
My 'fancy' white dishes from the Goodwill, along with a red plate between for a bit of extra added color.
Simple heart ornament and red roses from the Dollar Tree plus a huge heart cookie cutter to finish off the table. Then I hung another smaller cookie cutter from the kitchen light.
I'm cooking up my Easy Chicken Pot Pie.
And a Philly Brownie Cheesecake for dessert.
Find the recipe HERE.
Photo is from Philly site.
***Edited to add:  The dessert is DIVINE!  My own personal 'hint' is after you do all it says do per the recipe (all that chill time), it is BEST at room temp prior to serving.
I'll light the candles and enjoy a sweet little meal for two with my Special Valentine.
It doesn't have to cost a pretty penny to let someone know how much they are loved!
Yes, we dined by candlelight!  Dinner and conversation were both Yummy.
What did you or are you doing to share the love today?

A simple Thanksgiving Table is set.
That pretty green table runner? (Dollar Tree)
Our Thanksgiving menu will be:
Turkey and Ham (yes, we have to have both)
Mom's famous Chicken~n~Dressing
Sweet Potato Souffle (Mom's recipe!)
Corn, peas, cranberry sauce
Pistachio pudding (the kids LOVE this)
Cake & sweet potato pie for dessert
Banana bread for snacking
I don't know about you, but do you see anywhere for ALL that food?!?
Plans are to set up a folding table buffet.
It's about family, love and being together.
As my entire family will be here, 15 give or take an extra boyfriend or friend in the mix.
See the napkin rings?  Made them.
A toilet paper roll, cut in half (used these before here)
A bit of leftover burlap (from my monster frame project, posted yesterday)
With cute foam leaves from Hobby Lobby on clearance.
I just hot glued my fingers together it all together.
Kinda cute for cheap.
See that cute leaf plate under the napkin?
Here's a closer look
My weekend find at the junk store (88 cents each!).
Mom laughed when I told her she was bringing a sweet potato pie too!  We never have been pumpkin pie eaters in our family. So which is it for you?  Sweet potato or pumpkin?

The Almost done Tablescape

My 22 year old police officer son came to dinner!
Such a treat for this mom as he lives on his own and is a little work-aholic.  On duty, off duty...very little play time.  Even though I JUST cooked up a Chicken Pot Pie on Sunday, I skipped today's menu plan and whipped up another for tonight along with a loaf of fresh banana bread.  Can you tell Chicken Pot Pie is a family favorite?

I left work a couple of hours early and got to work on dinner, cut the leaves grass, baked, washed dishes and tidied up the house.  I started pulling together a simple tablescape for tonight.  When my son showed up early.
Here is the beginnings of what was to be...

My GORGEOUS new pear placemats, from Dawn over at Cottage State of Mind's giveaway.
A centerpiece of Dollar Tree garland, a couple of GREEN (not sure why they appear purple) candles from Big Lots.  Tied a tad of ribbon around them then sat them on my 'new' metal do-lolly from a junk store for $2.50.  It previously looked like this:

A bit of black spray paint and it's looking spiffy now as a candle holder.

Added a little uncooked pop corn.  A new look!

Sometimes life tosses things in that interrupt plans, projects or day to day tasks.  I chose today not to worry about getting the table 'perfect'.  It was pretty and 'fancy' enough for our family and friends enjoying time together.  I did add another candle right before lighting them.
Years from now, my friends and kids won't remember how pretty the table, or if the silverware was placed or they just helped themselves from the drawer.  But they will remember the laughter and fun we had just being together.  And that is real life folks.
